That Unmistakable Smell Of Orchestration

Another claimed suicide bomber attack. Call me a cynic but I've missed it the day the first UN monitors arrived in Damascus. Assad's way of saying hello to new guests. And now a shipfreight reported as 'arms for the rebels' discovered. Bravo (clap, clap, clap) for another stage-managed 'masterpiece'.

Who wonders that the Syrians struggling for the regaining of freedom and dignity are feeling kind of betrayed, abandoned, forsaken, stabbed in the back. Suddenly the 'efforts' to prevent more bloodshed appear as fade excuses for being unable or not wanting a regime change in the next time. 

"Arab Spring? C'mon, that was 2011. Tunisia? Too fast. The guy took the plane. We helped to get rid of Gaddafi (because we had our own reasons to get rid of him). Now Syria? There's still discussion potential .."

Russia and China seem suddenly the straight ones in the global orchestra:

"No ifs or buts, we stay with the regime."

Every halfways interested netizen/citizen is realising that with Assad resides natural given unscrupulousness in al-Sham's presidential palace. The slightest attempt of defending this aristo-fascist rulership is an abecedarian misregarding of human rights, becoming a complicit of crimes against humanity. And this is all but a remake of The  Good, The Bad And The Ugly. This is incomprehensible reality.

Thirteen and a half months is the justified uprising against disposal and oppression now old, a long time for all those courageous civilians, activists, dissidents - all the haunted the shabeeha and the regime militia are permanently targetting and attacking. Being mainly hidden or on the run the active part of the revolutionary movement has also to endure an emotional rollercoaster with the global coalition of the apparently willing. The hope for international aid even simply to come up to a cease fire in combination with a troop withdrawal follows the embarrassment about the inability and the passivity of the publicly condemning majority. The United States? Election campaign. France (in the meantime the loudest in the choir requesting more effective actions against the Syrian regime)? Presidential elections. Germany? Referring to international law. The United Kingdom? Tactically waiting how the three mentioned nations will decide. The rest? Caught in the global triangle system between the balancing powers.

While writing these few lines the pro-regimer's hard core puzzles for darn sure the next plot to 'surprise' .. finally only themselves. That's what Menhebbak High is drumming them into their brains. 'Armed gangs', 'terrorists', 'salafis', 'sectarian': all under the head label called 'conspiracy'. Reality? Only what Addounia and all the other regime controlled media air. All those grotesque (and most of all dilettant) attempts to convince the spectators from the existence of a physical threat. I'm also convinced, yes, but in the way that the regime itself marks this physical threat. To nearly every Syrian civilian in the meantime. And a mental threat. To all the lobotomized appearing supporters.

Having the lasting words of a young Palestinian still in my mind: The Syrian revolution started out in the streets and it will be finished in the streets. The price is immense. Every day new martyrs. New detentions. New humiliations. And above all smeary orchestrations trying to discredit the primary peaceful and secondarily self-defending freedom movement and the Free Syrian Army.

A Syrian posted recently her feelings asking for a miracle. She's not the only one demanding and hoping for that. Maybe it's only a little switch, an inner lever moved in the correct position  by the able and responsible ones (the optimist explanation). Maybe the global elites do not own such a switch or lever (the pessimist explanation). It is impossible to predict the development but the will and the resilience of the protesters inside Syria is not only remarkably strong, it is able to gain day by day new supporters around the world sympathizing with the Syrian revolution. And that is a massive merit of the sometimes hundres, sometimes thousands singing, chanting, dancing down on the streets. Their performances might also be called orchestrated. But their intentions, their feelings, their goals definitely aren't.

Instead of listen to the inner voice telling one self what is wrong and what is right the decision makers are disregarding and ignoring the honest claims the Syrian civilians are articulating and on the other side still taking the lousy regime-staged choreography for real. If this would be a stage play it's time to leave the theater now ..

Syria: The Musical Revolution

"Wo man singt, da laß' dich ruhig nieder, böse Menschen haben keine Lieder."

Take a rest where you hear chants, evil natures don't have songs. The quote from the German poet and wirter Johann Gottfried Seume has never lost his actuality regarding especially the revolutionary movement in Syria today.

Whereever we look at anti-regime protests in the crisis-shaken country we will remark chants, performances, dance and choreography. The musicality expressed during the rallies has to be pointed out and examined a little bit closer to understand the most powerful non-violent weapon against the tyrannic enemy: music. And it' worth to listen and to watch the Syrians performing under such life threatening circumstances.

One if not the icon among the Syrian revolutionary musicians is the Hamwee Ibrahim Qashoosh whose dakbe 'Yalla irhal ya Bashar' (Get out Bashar) has become a hymn far over the land's borders. The reply on Qashoosh's not absolutely subtle verbal attacks on Assad was tragically to say as expected. Begin of July 2011 the security forces detained him and cut his throat. But instead of being intimidated the people spread the melody, the lyrics in all ways, singing it themselves or posting the legendary Hama appearance at a night protest.

Homs became last summer more and more the hotbed of the revolution. In this upload the Homsees are performing during a night protest in September another revolutionary classic, 'Skaba' (the refrain says translated: tears are runnning over my cheek when I'm thinking about the martyrs of the Syrian people).

 

Everywhere all over the country the musical rallies are the center pieces of the unarmed uprising like here in Northwestern town Idlib where the participants demand freedom and the end of the regime.

 

They call him the Qashoosh from Jarjanaz, a small village in the region of Idlib. Benefitted with a wonderful voice the young man spreads an overwhelming energy during his gig. What might appear at first shallow sight as Syrian Idol is facing the barbaric crimes the Syrian people have to endure an act of constructive defiance and the motivating, pushing each other always focussing on the community and the common goal.

And the offspring? Just listen to Amoura, a high talented child living actually in a Lebanese refugee camp. Qashoosh's spirit affects the next generation and will still be reminded when memories of the regime leader are for a long time faded out.

 

While tanks are replaced like chess figures and monitors projecting an ambivalent impression of their mission the freedom striving Syrians have never abandoned to sing. And if they continue like that they will receive the deserved earnings in form of regaining freedom and dignity. Only with the power of their voices.

Belarus: After Andrei Sannikov's Release

Finally Andrei Sannikov is released. First of all I like to congratulate him regaining freedom and being again united with his son and his wife Iryna Chalip who fought the whole time courageously for his pardon.

Despite the preliminary personal happy end for the former Belarusian presidential candidate questions still rise what exactly president Alexander Lukashenko might have moved to this act of grace. Was it really the political and economical pressure of the European Union which led to his decision? Or was the risk for the Belarusian regime too high that the Northeastern nation could become barred from the prestigious Ice Hockey World Championship 2014? Was it possibly a phone call from his mighty neighbor Vladimir Putin urging him with some arguments, promises or even the consolidation of military contracts between both countries to that step? Or was it just a clever move from the KGB-trained ruler exactly knowing the carrot and stick game to maintain his power so that all released political prisoners have to live under the Damocles sword getting randomly detained again?

Maybe from all a bit. In the meantime Andrei Sannikov, newly shaped without beard, has hold his first public press conference speaking about the harsh conditions during his time in prison. The next weeks and months will show how and if the Belarusian regime is able to maintain its' promises made towards the release of political prisoners like Andrei Sannikov and his campaign coordinator Dmitry Bandarenka.

Meanwhile the European Union prepares to send back their ambassadors to Minsk in the coming days. Still other political prisoners like Siarhey Kavalenka are arrested and their immediate release stays unvariedly demanded. But for the moment the joy and relief about Andrei Sannikov's new gained freedom prevails.

An Open Prayer

God, I'm grateful that You are giving me the strength to endure unimaginable images since nearly a year now.

I'm grateful not having lost my mind in that time. Grateful that I'm still able to reflect and select what I'm witnessing via the new media.

I'm not asking why You let us human beings do that to each other. Being both half angel half beast it is our decision to which side we will tend during our voyage called life.

Some among us have decided to follow their inner beast causing a thousand and more times pain and suffer to others among us.

We who are striving for our inner angel are worrying about all the innocent victims this trace of darkness causes. We who believe in moral values like freedom, justice and equality are often left speechless behind after witnessing the crimes against humanity our own fellow human beings are committing.

Left behind feeling angry.

Left behind feeling powerless.

Left behind feeling exhausted.

But with Your mercy we are able to withstand the temptation of evil by not becoming as those who are responsible for their deeds as we all are responsible for our deeds. With Your mercy we are able to resist our own inner beast the other inner beasts among us are trying to evoke with their words and deeds.

And with Your mercy we are able to perceive the flame of light even in the darkest chapters of our experience.

God, I'm grateful for the faults and the talents You gave me on my way. Grateful for the insight to rely on Your immenseness. Grateful for Your guidance.

Self-Defense Under The Premise Of Non-Violent Resistance (Part One)

The general idea of acting with non-violent methods under authoritarian circumstances is far from being impossible. What Ghandi taught us nearly seventy years ago and what icons of peaceful resistance like Martin Luther King transported throuh their speeches and acting into the heads of the common generations is indeed a solid base to work on without becoming the same ruthless natures the oppressors and their henchmen are.

During the last months I tried from time to time to reflect about the borderline from non-violent behavior to self-defence, the field of taking necessary action to protect not only the own but most of all the lives of those close ones unable to shelter themselves against the oppressors‘ attacks. Unfortunately we live in a world where self-defence in certain cases will become denounced as aggression per se - by the oppressors themselves or their lobbyists. This specific tactic, filed under the label collective cynicism, makes it much more hard for the attacked not only to use a lot of their energy for the self-defending act but also for justifying their ,deeds‘ later as being in the ,tolerance level‘.

So let‘s call both sides in the ring analyzing each one‘s equipment: the violent part is keeping all tools used during suppression - from light and heavy arms to the measures of detention and torture the arsenal of dirty body- and mindbreaking accessories seems massive. And the violent part‘s not bound on something called rules when and how much to use from each type of arms. The non-violent part in the other corner has besides some other premises one main law to regard - not turning violent himself. Advantages before the beginning of the clinch obviously on the side of the violent part. The majority of the bookmakers will place their betting quotes due to that.

There are some other factors the non-violent will use to weaken his counterpart. Beginning from raising his voice about the oppressor‘s injustice over taking action via protests or informational events to convince the undecided part - in our image here  a fraction of the spectators - from no longer supporting the violent side until organizing strikes and civil disobedience the non-violent sparring partner can smash the central pillars the oppressor‘s power is based on.

But it takes at least besides the two basic attitudes to realize effectively those measures another one: discipline. The other side knows that well and will permanently attack ignoring every gong to call for the end of a round.

Creativity‘s demanded as next step before the non-violent part‘s getting completely cracked down. Permanently documenting the opponent‘s atrocities, teaching the newly won supporters and trying to convince the rest of the spectators to change their attitude by not getting taken down is the fundamental part to survive the next rounds.

Additional challenge is now trying to turn the violent part‘s actions against himself if possible - the East-Asian philosophy of fighting arts mixes in that moment up with the non-violent character.

Ghandi in a Shaolin monastery, so to say.

Learning to protect the sensitive areas, i.e. the minors, the weak ones, the pundits. Never forget that the violent part loves to target and attack those sensitive areas. It‘s in his nature. Still considering the main premise not to become as violent as the other side legal targets are to be defined during the stage of implemented self-defence. Destroying the opponent‘s armory for example. Crushing his own defence. Exposing him as weaker as he likes to appear.

Non-violence becomes defined during this step as not acting violently against the counterpart‘s life as such, only against his accessories - by causing a certain rate of material loss chances are high that some bets will become placed anew. The expected reaction will be a stronger, increasingly cruel attack on the non-violent part‘s sensitive areas with the intention to produce counter-violence as reaction. From that moment on the whole will power to resist those provocations is asked.

Remind that only one rude hit back isn‘t allowed (even if the whole clash seems completely unfair: fairness is only from the non-violent side expected).

Back to the Shaolin school: trying to turn the offender‘s energy against him might be nearly impossible in the case of a fired RPG. But urging him cleverly to waste ammo and material means heading into the right direction. Generally the purpose to risk the own life is stronger among the revolutionaries than among the oppressor‘s loyals. In the here documented example the non-violent part knows much more about his own risks than the violent part feeling himself more or less invincible regarding his weaponry. This deceitful safety is the Achilles‘ heel of the violent part. As long as he sits cosy in his tank firing randomly around he will feel strong. But without the sheltering steel around him the whole situation will turn upside down.

From now on the non-violent part is getting upper-hand because of his experience defending without sheltering armory. The next bets are going to be replaced by the bookmakers. Under ideal conditions this could become the tipping point of the inequal clash. Instead of pumping more energy in form of money, new weapons etc into the violent side  the financers will go more and more on distance. And those until now still undecided which side to support might also shift their sympathies.

Summoning the whole scenario: While the oppressor‘s side is based upon the ,everything goes‘-mentality due to

1) their weaponry

2) their armory and

3) their intention to attack preferredly the counterpart‘s sensitive areas

the revolutionary‘s side is based upon

1) learning, teaching, coaching and implementing the principles of non-violent resistance,

2) acting in self-defense to protect,

3) not getting misled by the opponent‘s attempts to provoke counter-violence,

4) attacking the counterpart‘s arsenal directly or indirectly by urging him to waste his weaponry and

5) exposing the opponent‘s weakness behind the armory to convince major parties no longer to support him.

So far the theory.

In this studies I'm only reflecting my personal thoughts. I'm a human and therefore far from being perfect. Please feel free to share your thoughts and ideas about this in my opinion important topic.

 

Syria: My Easter Message To The Assad Regime

Of course I could embed the videos here or connect a text passage to the hyperlink. But I refuse to. In all other platforms I'm present the mentioned images are easy to find. I refuse because I don't want to put more energy in them than needed. After what I've seen this year's Easter holidays I'm most of all grateful for the power God gives me to endure such disgusting and disgraceful impressions.

'We are ready for anything.' More clear the unscrupulous message of the regime can't be delivered. Assad's intention is not to regain power and stability under his despotic command. All he and his his henchmen want is to spread the poison of evil, not only all over Syria, they're going to spread that all over the planet. The crackdown of the protest movement is less than secondary in the meantime. A whole regime apparatus is on an amok run while the bystanders, better known as the rest of the world is commenting it with the words: 'Hold. Not acting yet. Let's wait what's happening next.'

Seen through the eyes of the global elites Syria has become the test tube baby for a humanitarian worst case scenario.

But should we accept being ruled by such ice-cold cynics? I say we should not. Honestly, I don't wanna share the same chamber in hell with those cold-blooded calculating people. Why I'm assuming to land there? Even by tolerating their behavior in form of silence I become a complicit of their crimes.

That's why I raise my voice. That's why I write. Yes, it's egoistic because I like to save my soul.

My reply to the big middle finger the bad Baath cops are showing everyone under the eyes of the global gathering is: at the end you all will fail. You'll get what you deserve for that what you're still committing to humanity. At the end we will triumph together with the true epic Syrians sacrificing since more than a year now nearly everything for their purpose, regaining freedom and dignity. You'll face justice for each drop of blood you're still shedding.

Your hbih are laughing while they mutilate the martyrs' bodies. Your menhebbakji are joking while they're cutting throats of civilians. Your mercenaries are insulting blasphemously the Prophet. But you will pay for all of that. The Assads as well as the Makhloufs and the other supremacists' clans.

The same God you're taunting will judge very soon over you, ya Bashar. Neither laconic nor sarcastic I'm giving you and your tribe the kind advice to enjoy from now on every morning you wake up.

Syrien: Versuch Und Irrtum

Mal ehrlich: hätte Assad diese sechs Punkte, die Kofi Annan ihm präsentiert hat, so mir nichts dir nichts in die Tat umgesetzt? Feuerpause, Truppenrückzug, humanitäre Helfer auf's Spielfeld lassen, alle politischen Gefangenen freilassen, Journalisten reinlassen, Proteste gegen ihn künftig zulassen?

Mittlerweile dürfte jeder einigermassen Belesene oder über die Nachrichtenkanäle Informierte über die unverminderten Bestialitäten der Sicherheitskräfte und deren Rückendeckung durch die Regimespitze Bescheid wissen.

Eine Feuerpause oder ein Rückgang des willkürlichen Beschusses ganzer Stadtviertel und Vororte findet de facto nicht statt, auch wenn der dafür - vorerst einmal - vereinbarte Termin der Zwölfte (war es nicht vor kurzem noch der Zehnte?) sein mag. Die steigende Anzahl der getöteten Zivilisten sowie der auf gezielte Hinrichtung weisenden Morde beweist die ungebremste blinde Zerstörungswut menschlichen Lebens in den Städten und Dörfern, die auf das Konto der regimetreuen Sicherheitskräfte gehen.

Unter Truppenrückzug verstehen Assads Einheiten derzeit die Verlagerung der Panzer aus den Stadtgebieten in die nähere Peripherie, um von dort aus wahllos auf die bewohnten Gebiete zu schiessen. Desweiteren hat das Regime angedeutet, dass ein Rückzug vorerst aus ruhigen Gebieten beginnen wird - was man darunter verstehen mag, kann man sich bei Einschätzung der Lage leicht ausmalen.

Sollte sich herausstellen, dass bereits chemische Waffen vom Regime eingesetzt wurden, wäre die internationale Gemeinschaft mit einer neuen Situation konfrontiert, die eine Intervention unausweichlich macht. Die Gefahr, eines solchen Verbrechens wegen dingfest gemacht zu werden, kann sich Assad nicht erlauben und wird mit allen Mitteln die Präsenz humanitärer Helfer auf eigenem Boden blockieren.

Was die politischen Gefangenen angeht: mit Sicherheit werden die Freigelassenen nicht zu ihren Familien zurückkehren und von weiteren Unmutsbekundungen gegen das Regime abraten. Eher im Gegenteil. Die sich daraufhin auftürmende Welle des Protests dürfte Assad wegspülen. Ausserdem würden seine Geheimdienste ihm dringend davon abraten, da ihre Methoden bei den Befragungen tausendfach an das Licht der Öffentlichkeit gelangen würden.

Journalisten dürften mit Wahrscheinlichkeit sogar einreisen, die Sicherheitskräfte würden schon dafür sorgen, dass der eine oder andere von einem Geschoss getroffen wird, dessen Herkunft das Regime lakonisch mit 'Die Rebellen waren's' kommentieren wird. Der Besuch bestimmter Distrikte in Hama und Homs würde den Berichterstattern seitens der Regimeeinheiten verwehrt werden. Fadenscheinige Gründe fänden diese mit Garantie genug.

Schliesslich noch das Zugeständnis von Regime- und insbesondere Assad-kritischen Demonstrationen. Jemand, der in der perfiden Selbstinszenierung samt Tross an sicheren, da gesicherten Orten Hof hält und der eigenen Bevölkerung über den Haus-Sender Addounia Heile-Welt-Idylle vorgaukelt, akzeptiert mit sehr hoher Wahrscheinlichkeit nicht die Überhandnahme von Versammlungen, die lautstark seine Abberufung in welcher Art auch immer fordern.

Ob aus dem Zwölften am Zehnten bereits der Fünfzehnte wird? Man muß mittlerweile leider auf alles gefasst sein, was die Mächtigen der Welt an Verzögerungstaktiken aus der Tasche ziehen, um ja keine Verantwortung verursacht durch Aktivität - möglicherweise von den Angesprochenen auch verwechselt mit Aktivismus - tragen zu müssen.

Man soll ein und denselben Fehler kein zweites Mal begehen. Wie wurden diese Punkte bereits in anderer Verpackung dem ignoranten Despoten vorgelegt und mal entschieden, mal gleichgültig verworfen? Mehr als einmal zu oft, um es noch einmal mit gutem Gewissen erneut zu versuchen ..

Weissrussland: Schwere Zeiten Für Oppositionelle

Öffentlich gegen das allmächtig wirkende KGB-Relikt Alexander Lukashenko zu agitieren war noch nie einfach. Der autokratische Hardliner und sein ergebener Anhang herrschen über das nordosteuropäische Land mit eiserner Faust.

Eines der jüngsten Dekrete, die Lukashenko erlassen hat, ist, einheimische Journalisten und Oppositionsfiguren an der Ausreise zu hindern. Ausser dubiosen schwebenden Gerichtsverfahren wurden einige Oppositionelle des Hooliganismus bezichtigt - eine mehr als fragwürdige Anklage gegen diejenigen, die sich dem gewaltlosen Widerstand gegen das Regime widmen.

Die Ankündigung, der weissrussische Präsident würde die Freilassung zweier prominenter Oppositioneller erwägen, unter ihnen der ehemalige Präsidentschaftskandidat Andrej Sannikov, ist mit äusserster Vorsicht zu geniessen. Sannikov, der im Dezember 2010 in Minsk nach einem friedlichen Protest gegen das Regime und die vorangegangene Wahl festgenommen und im Mai 2011 zu einer fünfjährigen Freiheitsstrafe wegen Anstachelung öffentlicher Unruhe verurteilt wurde, leidet unverändert unter erschwerten Haftbedingungen, von körperlicher Gewalteinwirkungen durch die Gefängniswärter über Isolationshaft bis hin zur Verweigerung dringend nötiger medizinischer Behandlung.

Das Regime in Minsk ist nicht nur darauf spezialisiert, den politischen, sondern auch den persönlichen Willen seiner Kritiker mit allen Mitteln zu brechen. Im Falle Siargey Kavalenkas kommt das ganze Ausmass des des post-stalinistischen Apparates in Weissrussland zum Tragen. Kavalenka wurde zu drei Jahren verurteilt, nachdem er in seiner Heimatstadt Vitebsk demonstriert und die weissrussische weiss-rot-weisse Unabhängigkeitsflagge auf der Spitze des öffentlichen Weihnachtsbaums gehisst hatte. Seit nunmehr dreieinhalb Monaten befindet sich Kavalenka aus Protest gegen sein Urteil im Hungerstreik. Das Regime liess ihn daraufhin vor kurzem in die psychiatrische Abteilung der Vitebsker Strafkolonie verlegen. An das Bett gefesselt und zwangsernährt hat sich sein Gesundheitszustand rapide verschlechtert.

Bis heute ist es extrem schwierig bis unmöglich für die engsten Verwandten der politischen Gefangenen, sie im Gefängnis zu besuchen. Eine weitere Massnahme des Lukashenko-Regimes, den Druck auf kritische Individuen, die das Ende der autoritären Herrschaft fordern, zu erhöhen.

Und der politische beziehungsweise wirtschaftliche Druck, den die EU aufgrund dessen auf Minsk ausübt? Sämtliche Bemühungen wirken derzeit recht hilflos anbetrachts Lukashenkos starrköpfiger Haltung gegenüber dem Westen. Brüssel berief Ende Februar seine diplomatischen Vertreter zurück, nachdem Minsk die europäischen und insbesondere den polnischen Botschafter aufgefordert hatte, das Land zu verlassen. Lukashenko reagierte seinerseits ausser der Ankündigung einer geplanten Einzelfallprüfung, was die eventuelle Rückkehr der EU-Botschafter betrifft, mit hartnäckigen Angriffen auf die Union, die aus seiner Sicht erpresserische Methoden gegen Weissrussland anwendet.

So kryptisch und kafkaesk die Gesamtsituation in Weissrussland für Aussenstehende erscheinen mag, so tragisch und dramatisch gestaltet sie sich für diejenigen Weissrussen mitsamt ihren Familienangehörigen, die nach Freiheit und Demokratie in ihrem Land streben, da sie sich permanent drastischer Konsequenzen bewusst sein müssen, wenn sie die Meinungsfreiheit für sich in Anspruch nehmen.

Und es ist beschämend für jeden Europäer, der seine Heimat nicht innerhalb der EU-Grenzen definiert, mitzuerleben, wie kontinentale Landsleute für die Forderung nach den gleichen Grundrechten, die Einwohner demokratisch geprägter Regionen in Anspruch nehmen können, auf derart drastische Weise bedroht werden.

Belarus: Hard Times For Opposition Members

Acting publicly against the allmighty KGB relict Alexander Lukashenko was never easy. The authocratic hardliner and his devoted staff are ruling the Northeastern country with an iron fist.

One of the last orders Lukashenko gave out was barring local journalists and opposition figures from leaving the country. Besides dubious pending lawsuits some members of the opposition were accused for hooliganism - a more than doubtful charge against those operating under the premises of nonviolent resistance.

The announcement that the Belarusian president might consider the release of two prominent opposition figures, among them the former presidential candidate Andrei Sannikov, has to be taken with more than a grain of salt. Sannikov, who was arrested in December 2010 after a peaceful anti-regime protest in Minsk and sentenced to 5 years imprisonment on charges of organizing mass disturbances, is still suffering tightened conditions like getting tortured, isolated from other prisoners or neglected needed medical care.

The regime in Minsk tries not only to break the political but also the personal will of its' critics. In the case of Siargey Kavalenka the whole dimension of the post-stalinist apparatus in Belarus can be discovered. Kavalenka was sentenced to three years after demonstrating and hanging the Belarusian white-red-white independence flag on top of the main New Year's tree in Vitebsk. Since three and a half months Kavalenka is protesting against his charge in form of a hunger strike. The result was that the regime ordered to move him to the psychiatric ward of the penal colony. Being force-fed and tied to bed Siargey Kavalenka's health status has become increasingly critical.

It is still very difficult or even impossible for the political prisoners' closest relatives to visit them in jail. Another measure of mounting the pressure on critical individuals demanding the end of the authoritarian rulership.

And the political or economical pressure the EU is putting on Minsk? All efforts seem a bit desperate regarding Lukashenko's obstinate bearing towards the West. Brussels recalled end of february his envoys after Minsk requested the EU and Polish ambassadors to leave the country. Lukashenko's reaction is besides a 'case by case' treatment of the envoys' possible return stubbornly defending his hardliner policy by accusing the European Union of blackmailing Belarus.

As cryptic and kafkaesque the whole situation in the former Sovjet republic might appear, for those Belarusians striving for freedom and democracy and for their relatives it is both tragic and dramatic facing drastic consequences for utilizing freedom of expression.

And it is shameful for every European who is defining his supranationality not only in-between the borders of the Union still to witness fellows being endangered while demanding the same basic rights the democratic nations are granting their inhabitants.

"An die höchste Stelle. Den obersten Repräsentanten. Es ist wirklich dringend."

"Ich bin erleichtert, das zu hören. Wann, glauben Sie, wird er einen Blick auf meinen Fall werfen?"

"Es tut mir leid, aber ich vergaß zu erwähnen, das er nicht sehen kann."

"Oh .. das tut mir leid .. doch er wird bestimmt zuhören, was ich ihm zu erzählen habe?"

"Unglücklicherweise nicht, da er ebenfalls nicht hören kann."

Noch nie zuvor in der Geschichte waren die Vereinten Nationen Zielscheibe gerechtfertigter Kritik wie heutzutage. Gerechtfertigt im Sinne einer mangelnden mittlerweile mehr als notwendigen energischen Initiative für das geradezu entwürdigend bedrohte syrische Volk. Die Welle des Arabischen Frühling erreicht den fünfzehnten Monat in Folge; zwei Länder können stolz von sich behaupten, ihre selbsternannten Monarchen losgeworden zu sein, zwei weitere Länder bezahlen die Zeche für wahrhaft faule Kompromisse hinter den Vorhängen der Macht, und die Syrer sind unverändert allein gelassen in ihrem Kampf gegen den grausamen Clan der Massenmörder. Keine Übertreibung: gegen die dunkle Dynastie wirken selbst Ed Gein und Charles Manson als Engel des menschlichen Mitgefühls.

Mithilfe des Internets und dem schnell verbreiteten Bild kann sich die Weltgemeinschaft zeitnah davon überzeugen, was in Städten wie Homs, Idlib, Daraa, Hama und mittlerweile auch Aleppo geschieht. Dank eines technologischen Werkzeugs, das richtig eingesetzt Leben retten kann. Doch anstella auf die hochgeladenen Zeugnisse der Verbrechen gegen die Menschheit angemessen zu reagieren, registrieren diejenigen, die etwas ausrichten könnten, lediglich die präsentierte Gewaltorgie und kommentieren die Tragödie ab und an mit weise klingenden Worten.

Flankiert von einer Lobby bestehend aus Bedenkenträgern und Interessensvertretern hinterlässt die Organisation, die eigentlich dafür bekannt ist, sich weltweit für die Grundrechte einzelner einzusetzen, den Eindruck eines behäbigen Clubs, der alle Zeit der Welt hat zu reflektieren und sich mögliche weitere Schritte zu überlegen. Zeit, die die syrische Zivilbevölkerung in ihrem Überlebenskampf gegen das gnaden- und gottlose Regime nicht hat.

Ein Blick in die jüngere Geschichte zeigt, dass die organisierte Weltgemeinde nicht gerade ein Topkandidat in Sachen Geschwindigkeit und Effizienz ist: nach Hitlers Machtergreifung dauerte es sechs Jahre, bis die Grossmächte dem Dritten Reich den Krieg erklärten und nochmal weitere sechs Jahre, bis der nationalsozialistische Alptraum beendet wurde. In Kambodscha konnten Pol Pots verwirrte Fanatiker in aller Ruhe einen Grosteil des eigenen Volks abschlachten. Die lateinamerikanischen Militärjuntas hatten zu keinem Zeitpunkt eine ernsthafte internationale Intervention zu befürchten. Ruanda ist 'schlicht und ergreifend passiert'.

Und die realisierten Einsätze? Objektiv betrachtet alles andere als Ruhmesblätter. Afghanistan, Irak, Bosnien, Somalia - das Peter-Prinzip paart sich mit Murphys Gesetz. Ausschliesslich Libyen entpuppte sich als Erfolg, die NATO unterstützte die Freiheitskämpfer von der Luft aus gegen die Truppen Gaddafis. Jedoch eine Ausnahme die die Regel bestätigt.

Doch das ist keine Entschuldigung dafür, im Falle Syriens dermassen wenig zu unternehmen. Zerrissen zwischen den Absichten der einzelnen Mitglieder und den daraus resultierenden Stellvertreterkriegen scheinen die Vereinten Nationen immer noch nicht begriffen zu haben, dass sie längst zu Komplizen von Assads mordenden Söldnern geworden sind. Tag für Tag verlieren dutzende, manchmal sogar hunderte gewaltsam ihr Leben, während wiederholt Friedenskonferenzen stattfinden und Friedenspläne präsentiert werden, in denen meistens dieselben Forderungen wieder auftauchen, die Wochen zuvor vom Regime verächtlich verworfen wurden. Geradezu der Gipfel der Naivität.

Bei der Auflistung der Kardinalfehler, die die globalen Gemeinschaft zu verantworten hat, ist als Hauptpunkt aufzuführen, dass die Führenden der Welt immer noch glauben, Assad sei zu einem Dialog bereit. Er ist es eben nicht und selbst die einfachsten Gemüter unter uns realisieren das. Ein weiterer Kardinalfehler ist das öffentliche Erscheinungsbild der selbsterkorenen Verhandlungspartner: eingehüllt in eine nebulöse Aura lassen sie nach ihren Auftritten mehr Fragen offen als beantwortet. Können sie in Wirklichkeit nicht mehr tun? Wollen sie in Wirklichkeit nicht mehr tun? Trifft fatalerweise beides zu? Mit jedem weiteren Tag der Tatenlosigkeit verliert die Organisation an Glaubwürdigkeit. Auch auf die Gefahr hin, dass dies nun sarkastisch klingt, mit einer erfolgreichen Beendigung der mörderischen Aktivitäten durch direktes Einwirken auf Assad könnte Russlands Putin, der als Mäzen der andauernden Massaker betrachtet wird, theoretischerweise als Retter vieler Leben in die Geschichte eingehen - nicht unbedingt aus Sicht der bis dato leidgeprüften Syrer selbst, doch im Spiegel der Weltgeschichte betrachtet durchaus. Und Ban Ki-moons zahnloser Verein würde unnützer denn je dastehen.

Wie lange wird es wohl noch dauern, bis die Welt die Bedeutung des Wortes 'vereint' wiederentdeckt? Nachdem Assad den Befehl gegeben hat, chemische und biologische Waffen gegen die Bevölkerung einzusetzen? Nachdem Massenvernichtungswaffen gesprochen haben? Leider wird es dann endgültig zu spät für die meisten sein. Und nicht nur Russland, China oder der Iran, sondern die ganze Welt werden mit der Schuld der Tatenlosigkeit und der direkten und indirekten Mittäterschaft für eine sehr lange Zeit leben müssen ..

"OK .. and who do you like especially to address with your request?"

"The highest of your representatives if possible. It's urgent."

"Sorry, but I forgot to mention that he is not able to see."

"Oh .. that's a pity .. but he will listen to what I have to tell him?"

"Unfortunately not because he's not able to hear."

"Well .. might he tell others how to help me and my family then?"

"For sure it will be his honest intention but he can't speak."

"So I got you right: your highest representative is the one who can help me but he's blind, deaf and dumb .. I can live with that as long as he does something for us."

"You mean acting? Far from. He's also paralyzed."

Never in the history the United Nations were target of justified critics as nowadays. Justified because of the missing energic initiative more than necessary in the meantime for a disgracefully threatened Syrian civil society. The Arab Spring current is heading towards the 15th month; two countries can proudly state that they'd get rid of their self-claimed monarchs, another two are paying the price for truly foul compromises behind the curtains of power, and the Syrians still are kind of left alone with their struggle against the cruel clan of mass murders. Not exaggerating: against the deadly dynasty even Ed Gein and Charles Manson appear like angels of humanness.

Thanks to the internet and the fast spread image the world community can see what is going on in cities like Homs, Idlib, Hama, Daraa and meanwhile also Aleppo. Thanks to a technology tool which can save lives if used correctly. But instead of reacting on the uploaded testimonials of crimes against the humanity those being responsible for taking action are only registrating the orgy of violence once in a while commenting the tragedy with some wise tingling words.

Flanked by a lobby of scaremongers and interest keepers the organisation normally known to act for the granted basic rights worldwide is leaving the impression of a sedate club having all the time to reflect and to think about possible steps. Time the Syrian civilians don't have in their survival fight against a ruthless regime.

Heading back in the younger history the organized global community's not a candidate for fast efficiency: it took six years after Hitler's coup until the big powers declared war on the 3rd Reich and another six years to end the national socialist nightmare. In Cambodia Pol Pot and his bewildered fanatics could slaughter unhurriedly a huge part of the own population. The Latin American military juntas never had to fear a serious intervention. Ruanda 'simply happened'.

And what about the international interventions which took place until now? All but glorious chapters regarded objectively. Afghanistan, Iraq, Bosnia, Somalia - Peter principle met Murphy's law. Only Libya turned out to be a success allowing the NATO to support the freedom fighters with air raids against Gaddafi's army. But in the whole context it becomes an exception that proves the rule.

That is no excuse to do nothing in the case of Syria. Torn between concerns and proxy wars the United Nations haven't realized becoming in the meantime a complicit of the crimes against humanity Assad's mercenaries are committing. Every day dozens, sometimes hundreds civilians get murdered while repeatedly peace talks are hold and peace plans are presented, often simply repeating the same rejected demands as some weeks ago appearing as the top of naivity.

Summoning the master mistakes of the global community the main one still is that the world leaders still believe Assad is ready for a dialogue. Fact is he isn't and even the simple minds among us are realizing that. Another big mistake is the public appearance of the global representatives: enclosed in an opaque aura they're letting more questions open than answered. Can't they do anything? Won't they do anything? Might fatally both be true? With every day still staying inactive the organisation will lose more and more credibility. Even if it might sound sound now sarcastically, with a successful turn towards the Syrian people and against Assad by stopping his murder machine Russia's Putin who is still regarded as stepfather of the ongoing massacres can theoretically triumph as savior of many lives - maybe not among the Syrians themselves but in the eyes of the world community. And Ban's toothless tiger club will appear more useless than ever.

How long will it take until the world's rediscovering the meaning of 'united'? After Assad's order to use chemical and bacterial bombs? After the use of mass destruction arms? Sorry, but then it's ultimately too late. And not only Russia, China or Iran, all nations of the world will have to live with the guilt of inactivity for a very long time ..

Protestgesänge, Parolen, Bekundungen

"Es ist auch eine musikalische Revolution." Die Worte meines Freundes und Bruders Hammad schwirren durch mein Gedächtnis, wenn ich an den syrischen Widerstand denke. Der Geist der Gesänge, Slogans und Schlachtrufe verbreitet sich mittlerweile über die ganze Welt, wenn die syrische Gemeinschaft in den jeweiligen Ländern Solidaritätsdemonstrationen abhalten zu Ehren ihrer Brüder und Schwestern im Heimatland, die sich im Würgegriff der gottlosen Vertreter des Bösen, des Regimes, befinden.

Selbst Deutschland, normalerweise nicht gerade bekannt für empathische und emotionsgeladene Demonstrationen - ein Blick nach Frankreich, Italien oder Griechenland genügt, um zu verstehen, was ich meine - wird zum Austragungsort des neuen syrischen Selbstbewusstseins. Kein Demonstrationsmarsch, keine Kundgebung, keine Benefizveranstaltung ohne Gesänge und Choreographie. Mag auf den ersten Blick verwirrend für den durchschnittlichen Staatsbürger hier erscheinen, der Proteste im allgemeinen mit einer empörten Menge, die Transparente tragend von a nach b marschiert und eindringlich den Gastrednern lauscht, verbindet. (Beziehungsweise mediengesteuert einen aufgebrachten Mob bestehend aus Chaoten und Nichtstuern, die steinewerfend durch die Bürgerlichkeit marodieren, registriert.) Natürlich gibt es Bei Protesten für ein freies Syrien hier Banner und Gastredner, Herzstück jeder Veranstaltung sind jedoch die Gesänge.

Seit der Aufstand gegen das Assad-Regime vor über einem Jahr begonnen hat, ist die Anzahl der solidarischen Protestkundgebungen weltweit enorm angestiegen. Was anfangs mit einer Handvoll Menschen startete, erreicht mittlerweile in den grösseren Städten Dimensionen von mehreren tausend Teilnehmern. Doch die Grösse des Protests ist eigentlich zweitrangig anbetrachts der musikalischen und melodischen Beiträge, die als Würdigung der rebellierenden Syrer im Heimatland vorgetragen werden. Einlagen wie Flash Mobs oder Freeze Mobs folgten im Laufe des vergangenen Jahres, um damit die Einheimischen vor Ort anzusprechen und zu erreichen. Vor allem die nordamerikanischen Syrer sind mittlerweile bekannt für ihre Choreographien in Einkaufszentren und auf öffentlichen Plätzen.

Im Zeitraum von Mitte bis Ende März nahm ich an zwei Demonstrationen für die Wiedererlangung von Syriens Freiheit und Würde im Südosten und im Norden Deutschlands teil. Zwei vollkommen unterschiedliche Regionen in unserem Land, zwei verschiedenartige Großstädte, die eine oft als nördlichste Stadt Italiens bezeichnet, die andere aufgrund ihrer Lage nahe des offenen Meeres als Tor zur Welt bekannt. Könnte es doch glatt einen regionalen Unterschied geben, wenn man die Veranstaltungen gegenüber stellt, obwohl bei beiden die syrische Exilgemeinschaft demonstriert zusammen mit den Brüdern und Schwestern aus dem Mittleren Osten und Nordafrika sowie einigen Einheimischen, die ihre eigene Mauer der Angst, was die Teilnahme an einer Protestveranstaltung betrifft, überwunden haben?

Gemeinsames Ziel über allem ist es, die sich erhebenden Syrer daheim moralisch und mental zu stärken. Zur Erinnerung: im allgemeinen werden Demonstrationen hier in unseremn politisch stabilen Regionen bei den örtlichen Behörden zur Genehmigung beantragt. Versucht das mal in Syrien und und ihr erhalten im besten Falle als Bestätigung eurer Anfrage eine Kugel in den Kopf (Ausnahme wäre die Anmeldung einer Pro-Regime-Demonstration, die kein halbwegs vernünftiger Mensch je in Erwägung zöge, ausserdem inszeniert sich das Regime ja selbst). Andererseits muss man hier keine Angst haben, von einem auf den Häuserdächern postierten Scharfschützen niedergestreckt zu werden, wenn man mit  dem demonstrierenden Pulk um die Ecke biegt. Ich würde mich nicht wundern, wenn einer der Syrer auf einen deutschen Polizisten zugehen und ihm von Herzen dafür danken würde, dass dieser ihn nicht gleich erschossen hat.

Die Möglichkeit zu haben, unter zivilisierten Grundbedingungen zu demonstrieren, ist ein Vorzug. Daher ist es mehr als selbstverständlich, dass sämtliche Aktivitäten hier als Würdigung des Mutes, der Kreativität und der Willenstärke, die die Syrer in der Heimat in ihren Herzen und ihrer Seele tragen, zu verstehen sind. Keiner von uns, der jemals Zeuge oder gar Opfer eines ultra-autoritären Regimes wurde, kann überhaupt nachempfinden, was die Menschen dort durchmachen.

"Wir werden nicht schweigen oder zum Schweigen gebracht werden. Das Schweigen der Weltgemeinschaft ist beschämend genug. Wir werden unsere Stimmen bis zum letzten Atemzug erheben."

Unsere Gedanken und Gefühle sind mit den Märtyrern und ihren Familien. Unsere Gebete sind mit den Gefangenen und den Demonstranten.

Rallying, Chanting, Appreciating

'It's also a musical revolution.' Those words of my brother Hammad are always surrounding in my ears thinking about the Syrian resistance. The spirit of the chants, slogans and battle rhymes is in the meantime floating over the whole world where Syrian expats organize solidarity rallies as a tribute to their brothers and sisters in a country strangled by faithless representants of evilness, the regime.

Even Germany, generally not known for empathic and emotion-loaded demonstrations - go to France, Italy or Greece and witness there a rally, then you know what I mean - experiences the new Syrian self-awareness. No demonstration, rally or charity event without chants and choreography. Might appear bizarre for the average German who's associating protests with an upset crowd marching from a to b holding up some banners and listening concentratedly to the guest speakers. For sure, guest speakers are also attending Free Syria rallies but the heart-piece  of each event is chanting together.

Since the uprising in Syria began more than one year ago the solidarity protests all over the world widened increasingly. Beginning with small groups some of the events are reaching nowadays a few thousand participants. But it didn't matter the size of the rally. Chants and music were from the beginning a main part of the expression. Flash mobs and freeze mobs followed later trying to raise the awareness among the locals; North American Syrians have become kind of famous for their choreographies in malls or on public places.

In the period from middle to end of March I took part at two protest events in the Southeast and in the North of Germany. Two completely different regions in our country; two different metropolises, one often titled as the most northern city of Italy, the other one known as the port to the world. Could there be a difference imagining that a Levantine expats' community is rallying together with their Middle East & Northern African brothers and sisters and some residents breaking their own wall of fear in the matter of participating on a demonstration?

Common task of all those events is above all empowering the uprising Syrians inside. As a reminder: generally protests here in stable nations have to be officially announced and admitted by the local authorities. Try that in Syria and you receive as admission in the best case a bullet in your head (only exeption is announcing a rally for the regime but no clearminded one would do that). On the other side no rooftop snipers are expecting you when you turn with the protesting mass around the corner here in the stable nations. It wouldn't wonder me if one of the Syrians is heading towards a German policeman shaking hands and thanking for not shooting at him.

Having the chance to rally in a safe haven is a privilege. Therefore it's self-evident that all the activities here are an appreciation of the courage, the creativity and the will power the Syrians inside are carrying in their hearts and minds. Noone of us who had ever witnessed the circumstances of an ultra-authocratic regime is able to comprehend what the people there are going through.

'We won't be silenced. The silence of the world is shame enough. Our voices will raise until our last breath.'

Our thoughts are with the martyrs and their families. Our prayers are with the detainees and the protesters.
